Michelle M. Shin, Director

Michelle joined the firm in 1998 and practices in the areas of business and commercial law, real estate, employment, intellectual property, and business immigration law.  Examples of her work include:

  • Business and Commercial Law:  Advise clients regarding choice of business entities; assist clients with forming Hawaii business entities; draft documents and coordinate closings for business acquisitions and sales; advise clients regarding the creation and termination of security interests; draft various commercial contracts.
  • Real Estate Law:  Assist clients with purchase and sale of commercial and residential real estate; negotiate and draft deeds, mortgages, leases, assignments of lease, easements, and encroachment agreements; advise clients regarding title issues; assist clients with Land Court petitions and probate proceedings to transfer real property; advise and assist clients with subdivision and consolidation of real property.
  • Employment Law:  Work on wage and hour law and employment discrimination cases; draft employment handbooks; present seminars on employment law issues, such as workplace privacy; draft employment agreements and independent contractor agreements; draft noncompetition agreements; advise clients regarding plant closure laws; and advise clients regarding general human resources matters, such as hiring and termination procedures, employment benefits, and workplace investigations.
  • Intellectual Property Law:  Advise clients regarding intellectual property protection; draft assignments, licensing agreements, and publishing agreements; assist clients with State and Federal trademark and copyright registrations; and represent clients in infringement and cybersquatting cases.
  • Immigration Law:  Assist clients with applications to obtain E-2 treaty investor and L-1 intracompany transferee visas.

Ms. Shin received her B.A. in Sociology from the University of California at Santa Cruz, and graduated with Honors.  Before entering law school, Ms. Shin interned with the Santa Cruz District Attorney’s Office and the Consumer Protection Office of the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, and provided volunteer services to the East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation and Project Open Hand.  Ms. Shin attended Hastings College of the Law where she served as Internet Editor of the Hastings Communications and Entertainment Law Journal.  During law school, Ms. Shin also volunteered with the Asian Law Caucus Employment Law Clinic, represented clients through the Hastings Civil Justice Clinic, and was an extern with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.  In 2009, Ms. Shin was named one of Pacific Business News’ Forty Under 40, in recognition of her leadership in the business community and commitment to community service.
